A Huge Ray of Sunshine

The truth is that speaking up for Jesus isn’t always as hard as we think it will be. The light of God’s love will inevitably shine through us as we live our lives for God’s glory. I’ve learned to come out of the Christian closet very early in my friendships and relationships. That way there are no surprises. When people know what we stand for, it often spares us the need to say too much. It’s our actions people are watching. While things might not always work out the way we think they will, as followers of Jesus Christ we always have strength in the name of the Lord. And in the end, things will eventually work out for our good.

King Nebuchadnezzar thought he’d won the war, but he hadn’t even won the round. After throwing the brothers into the fiery furnace, he “was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, ‘Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?’ They answered and said to the king, ‘True, O king.’ He answered and said, ‘But I see four men unbound walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods’” (Dan. 3:24–26).

When God’s presence is with you, the fire has no power over you. The same God who will lead you into the fire is the God who will walk into the fire with you. The same God who promises that “when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you” (Isa. 43:2) is the God who will keep that promise. He did it quite literally for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they were thrown deep into the furnace.

The power of the Christian is that we don’t have to fear the fiery furnace. God has overcome every fiery furnace we will ever face. If we’re looking to impact our world, it will happen when we learn to trust God unflinchingly and completely. The power of our testimony is loudest when we’re in the fiery furnace. The presence of God is most visible when we’re walking through the fire. King Nebuchadnezzar saw it. He was so overwhelmed by the outcome that he blessed the name of the Lord. He wrote a new decree: “Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way” (Dan. 3:29).

God’s arms will always catch you when it feels like you’re falling. You might not see the outcome on the front end of the test. You’ll have to walk by faith, not by sight. But every test you take to speak up when it’s easier not to is a chance to live what you say you believe. It’s a chance to lift up the name of Jesus and declare that He is indeed worthy of your trust.
